Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery in Houston

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery - successful golf back swing

Due to advances in disc decompression surgery, minimally invasive techniques using endoscopes and microscopes now allow for smaller surgical incisions. Shorter recovery times from surgery means getting back to the things you enjoy.

Modern surgery techniques continue to improve with technology and education. Dr. Siddiqi, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery, follows and contributes to the advances in minimally invasive surgical practices. Years of practice, study and contributions to the medical field help him to see each case as a unique treatment opportunity. Read more about Dr. Siddiqi's Credentials.

Dr. Siddiqi also uses the technique of lumbar 'facet to pedicle' fixation to allow posterolateral fusion and fixation of spinal segments. This allows for small incisions, less muscle dissection, shorter surgery times and early recovery. This can be performed percutaneously or with a small, mini-open approach utilizing a small incision by which to operate.

Minimally invasive spine surgery techniques that may be recommended by Dr. Siddiqi include:

Percutaneous Discectomy

Endoscopic Discectomy

Microscopic Discectomy

Microendoscopic Discectomy

Spinal Fusion

Percutaneous Spinal Instrumentation

Many procedures are performed with small surgical tools and a tubular retractor approach. Tubular retractors are inserted near the area of interest creating a tube that holds muscles and tissue back allowing a clear path for endoscopic tools. If bone or disk materials are removed during the procedure, they are removed through the tubular channel and any pins, screws or fusion materials are inserted through the same tubular retractor. Your surgeon is guided by special real-time imaging and microscopic viewers to view the procedure through the retractor and on screen.

Minimally invasive spine surgery is an effective tool in backpain relief and back injury repair. There are some risks with any procedure and your surgeon, Dr. Siddiqi, may need to convert to an “open surgery” procedure based upon real-time findings. All surgical and non-surgical options will be discussed with you prior to any procedure so that you have a full understanding of the pros and cons of a suggested treatment approach.

After a minimally invasive procedure, recovery includes post-operative treatment plans and may include specific follow-up or rehabilitation plans for your injuries. Most minimally invasive surgeries give patients a better quality of life, faster recovery and less pain.
