This describes abnormal curvature of the spine. Scoliosis describes curvature in the lateral plane and kyphosis describes curvature in the A-P (anterior-posterior) plane. Causes may be congenital and/or acquired. These patients need to be carefully evaluated and followed for progression and treated based on symptoms and the degree of curvature. Most patients benefit with conservative care with physical therapy, bracing and may be candidates for minimally invasive options if surgery is needed.
